The BNP is pleased to introduce you to the finalists who have been selected for the 2023 ATHENA honors. This includes the ATHENA Leadership Award®, the ATHENA Young Professional Leadership Award®, and the ATHENA Organizational Award®, which recognizes one for-profit organization and one non-profit organization that inspire women in WNY.

We're highlighting each finalist in the weeks ahead, leading up to the Awards Luncheon. Come back often to read the profiles and you’ll learn what it means to be an ATHENA!

Celebrate all of our finalists and see the recipients announced LIVE on March 29, 2023 at the Buffalo Niagara Convention Center.

The Buffalo Niagara Partnership is pleased to introduce you to 1 of 5 finalists in the ATHENA Organizational Non-Profit Award® category: Horizon Health Services

Horizon Health Services, Inc. is a not-for-profit corporation that provides hope and healing for individuals and their families dealing with substance use and/or mental health disorders. Established in 1975, we are the largest provider of outpatient mental health and substance use treatment in Western New York. Horizon serves over 22,000 Western New Yorkers per year, including adults, young adults and adolescents, families, and veterans.

Company Culture

There are a number of ways Horizon has created and sustained an innovative culture that supports and develops women employees to achieve their full leadership potential. Horizon’s staff is around 78% women throughout the organization.

Within Horizon, a training and development program was created in 2009 titled Horizon University, which is available for every employee throughout the organization to participate in. We believe that continuing education is a life-long practice and an integral part of development. Horizon University is a means of ensuring employees obtain comprehensive training on both clinical and non-clinical concepts and culturally responsive practices.

Community Engagement

Horizon provides endless opportunities for women in the community through extensive community-wide training (both virtual and in-person), mentorship initiatives with universities, schools, etc., and volunteer programs throughout the year. Education and awareness play a vital role in what Horizon does and they work closely with community organizations, schools, and collaborators to provide opportunities to enhance the quality of life of community members and their families and loved ones by educating around mental health, substance use and continuing to play a supportive role for women developing throughout their personal and professional lives.

Leadership

Horizon’s executive team consists of 12 executives and 9 of them are women. The 9 roles that are held by women include President and CEO, COO, VP of Quality Operations, VP of Administrative Operations, VP of Employee Services, VP of Clinical Operations, St. VP of Operations, Chief Legal Counsel, and VP of Finance. The Senior Leadership team consists of 14 executives and 11 are women.

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

Horizon has advanced its DEIB (Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging) initiatives company-wide through a strong strategy and sustainable department that has been developed. Some of the areas that we have advanced and seen significant progress in include a strategic Action Plan that identifies specific commitments to promote and advance DEIB initiatives throughout the company; Horizon’s DEIB Council with 2 subcommittees focused on clinical initiatives and care and community networking/representation; and training on various DEIB topics, including one specifically geared towards new hires, managers, and hiring managers.
