The next generation of Buffalo Niagara's business leaders won't be defined solely by their job titles. They'll be defined by their ability to communicate effectively, continue learning, build meaningful relationships and engage with the communities around them.

Those themes were at the center of BNP Forward, a half-day professional development experience for BNP Young Professional members that brought together emerging professionals from across the region to build skills, expand networks and explore new opportunities for leadership and civic engagement.

Here are four key takeaways from the event.

 

Investing in professional growth

The program opened with Own Your Edge: Why Professional Development Defines the Next Leader, led by Celine Krzan, Clinical Assistant Professor of Entrepreneurship, Operations Management and Strategy at the University at Buffalo School of Management.

Krzan (pictured below) challenged YPs to take ownership of their career development and embrace continuous learning as a key driver of long-term success. Participants explored strategies for building the habits, skills and mindset needed to grow as professionals and leaders.

The session also featured a panel discussion, Lessons Learned on the Climb Up, highlighting graduates of the BNP Empower management training program:

  • Joshua Howard, Director of Talent Development, Seneca Gaming Corporation
  • Tori Robinson, Marketing Manager, Safetec of America, Inc.
  • Jenessa Santos, Operations Manager, Lippes Mathias LLP

They shared personal experiences, leadership lessons and practical advice for navigating career growth, providing real perspectives on professional development.

 

Building stronger communication skills

The second session, Speak Smart: Mastering Effective Communication in the Workplace, focused on one of the most valuable skills in today's workplace: effective communication.

Led by Pete Petrella, President of TalentRise, the session provided strategies for navigating workplace dynamics, communicating clearly and increasing their impact across teams and organizations.

Participants explored how thoughtful communication can strengthen relationships, improve collaboration and create opportunities for professional advancement.

Leadership through civic engagement

The afternoon concluded with Lead Where You Live: Building Impact Through Civic Engagement, a panel discussion focused on the connection between community involvement, leadership development and professional growth.

Moderated by Josh Veronica, Director of Government Affairs at the Buffalo Niagara Partnership, the discussion featured leaders from business, government and nonprofit organizations:

  • Rachael Ireland, Community Engagement Manager, Rich Products
  • Shannon Patch, VP of Government Affairs, Delaware North
  • Jerome Singletary, Director of Government Relations, United Way of Buffalo & Erie County
  • Taisha St. Jean Tard, Erie County Legislator, District 2
  • Austin Tylec, Mayor, City of North Tonawanda

Panelists discussed how civic engagement had shaped their own leadership journeys while offering practical ways to become more involved in their communities. The conversation highlighted how community involvement can expand professional networks, strengthen leadership skills and create meaningful opportunities to make an impact throughout the region.

 

Creating connections for the future

In addition to the educational sessions, BNP Forward provided opportunities to connect with fellow young professionals from across Buffalo Niagara.

Throughout the afternoon, participants engaged in thoughtful discussions, exchanged ideas and built new relationships with peers who share a commitment to personal and professional growth. The program concluded with a networking happy hour, allowing conversations to continue and connections to deepen.

By bringing together emerging professionals from across industries, BNP Forward helped participants strengthen those skills while building connections that will continue to support their careers and contribute to the future of Buffalo Niagara.
