3 reasons why in-person networking matters for the next generation of leaders

Scrolling through LinkedIn can only get you so far.

In today’s digital world, it is easy to assume that building your network can happen entirely online. But if you ask any well-networked professional where their most valuable relationships started, chances are it was not over a screen—it was in person.

BNP’s Young Professionals (YP) membership is rooted in the belief that real connections, career development, and regional engagement begin by being present, participating, and engaging with peers who share that drive. From our Tee Up For Networking event to the upcoming summer meetup, we’re creating opportunities that foster authentic interaction and lasting value.

Here are three reasons why attending in-person networking events can help you get ahead.

1. Online is convenient, but in person is impactful

Sending a connection request is easy. Building real relationships takes more than a scroll or a swipe. In-person events create shared experiences that make it easier to remember names, have real conversations, and build lasting connections. Research backs it up: 85% of professionals say in-person networking builds stronger relationships, and face-to-face meetings enable the trust and camaraderie necessary for long-term collaboration.  These relationships can turn into job leads, project collaborations, or professional growth.

2. You meet people who are going through the same stage of life

The BNP YP program is designed for professionals who are building momentum in their careers. Whether you are exploring new industries, looking for mentorship, or just hoping to meet people outside of your office, these events are full of others on the same path. There is no pressure to be perfect—just show up and bring your curiosity.

3. Networking is more valuable when it feels natural

No elevator pitches or forced conversations, just casual settings that help people open up and connect. At our events, you are just as likely to chat with someone about your favorite Buffalo restaurant as you are to swap business advice. That combination of personal and professional connection is where the magic happens.

If you are looking for an easy way to get started, join us for our next YP event: History Meets Happy Hour on Tuesday, July 23. It starts with a guided tour of Forest Lawn Cemetery and ends with networking at Hutch’s. Come for the history, stay for the conversation.
