Healthcare leaders define shared challenges, advocacy priorities

Leaders from across Buffalo Niagara gathered on May 27 for the Buffalo Niagara Partnership's Healthcare & Human Services Industry Leaders Forum, a conversation focused on the challenges, opportunities and policy issues shaping one of the region's most critical industries.

The forum featured keynote remarks from Thomas J. Quatroche, Jr., PhD, President and CEO of ECMC Corporation and incoming President and CEO of the Healthcare Association of New York State (HANYS).

Here is what the BNP and its attendees learned at the latest ILF.

 

Navigating a changing landscape

A central theme throughout the discussion was the rapid pace of change facing healthcare organizations. Leaders highlighted ongoing workforce shortages, financial pressures, evolving patient needs and increasing regulatory requirements as key challenges impacting organizations across the sector.

At the same time, participants noted significant opportunities for innovation, collaboration and system-wide improvements. Advances in technology, new care delivery models and stronger partnerships between healthcare providers, community organizations and employers were identified as important tools for addressing future challenges.

 

Importance of a unified advocacy voice

Attendees discussed the growing importance of coordinated advocacy efforts across healthcare and human services organizations. While individual organizations face unique circumstances, participants identified several common issues that affect the sector as a whole, including workforce development, reimbursement policies, access to care and regulatory reform.

The conversation reinforced the value of healthcare leaders speaking with a unified voice when engaging policymakers at the local, state and federal levels. Participants emphasized that greater alignment can help strengthen the region's ability to advocate for policies that support both providers and the communities they serve.

Workforce remains a top priority

Workforce emerged as one of the most consistent challenges throughout the ILF. Organizations continue to navigate recruitment and retention pressures across clinical, administrative and support roles.

Participants discussed strategies for building stronger talent pipelines, creating more accessible career pathways and improving employee engagement. Many noted that addressing workforce shortages will require continued collaboration among healthcare providers, educational institutions, workforce organizations and policymakers.

During small-group discussions, healthcare and human services leaders identified several common priorities:

The industry leaders also expressed a desire for continued opportunities to connect with peers, share best practices and identify areas for collaboration.
