Employing DE&I in WNY

 Employing DE&I in WNY

Buffalo Niagara employers are overwhelmingly committed to the issues of diversity, equity, and inclusion, but there is a mixed track record of successful implementation.  That is the key finding from the Buffalo Niagara Partnership’s (BNP) newly released Employing Diversity, Equity & Inclusion in WNY: 2020 Western New York Diversity & Inclusion Business Community Assessment.  The assessment findings come at a time when Buffalo Niagara, New York State, and the United States continue to deal with a reckoning on race relations and the shortcomings in creating economic opportunity for all.

An extension of the BNP’s diversity and inclusion programs and initiatives, the assessment complies the sentiments of employers of various sizes throughout Western New York representing several major industries.  More than 260 employers participated in the assessment providing statistically significant data that can be applied to the Buffalo Niagara employer community as a whole.

The assessment found that:

  • 72% of respondents have started a D&I journey
    • Only 17% of those respondents report their company has set concrete D&I goals
    • Only 5% of those respondents say their company has achieved those goals
  • 27% of respondents report not yet beginning their D&I journey
  • Non-profits are most likely to have started D&I work
  • Manufacturers and construction firms are least likely to have started D&I work

In addition to deep background on respondent demographics and detailed analysis of the findings, the assessment also highlights Buffalo Niagara employers and business leaders who successfully champion D&I initiatives, as well as action steps all employers can take to start or enhance their own D&I work.

Employing Diversity, Equity & Inclusion in WNY was made possible through the generous support from the Community Foundation for Greater Buffalo, the Walmart Foundation, and an anonymous group of local business leaders.
