Meet This Week’s ATHENA Leadership Award® Finalist

Nora McGuire
Senior Vice President & Chief Marketing Officer
Independent Health

Nora McGuire is senior vice president and chief marketing officer at Independent Health in Buffalo, where she is responsible for ensuring members have a positive experience with Independent Health, starting with an engaged and dedicated group of individuals working together. The work of Nora’s team has helped Independent Health become a recognized leader in health care in Western New York and across the country.

A nurse by training, with many years in the health care industry, Nora draws upon her past experience and knowledge to help make connections others with varying backgrounds are not able to see. Prior to joining Independent Health, Nora was director of talent management at Performance Management Partners and was senior vice president at HealthNow NY before that.

Nora has served as a board member, race chair and active volunteer for Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure in support of breast cancer research. She is also the vice-chair of the Centers for Hospice and Palliative Care board and the chair of the Hospice Foundation board. In addition, she is a Horizon Management Group board member, Invest Buffalo Niagara board member and Performance Committee chair.

First Job

Nora was a nurse’s aide at a nursing home while going to nursing school and worked a second job at the pet department at Grant’s department store (she says she really doesn’t like touching animals).

Career Highlights

Nora says that while she has been a part of many positive outcomes—both large and small—she is continuously striving to do more, go farther, and grow in her role and in her life. She believes even with a long-standing career, if you are not continuously learning and experiencing new things, you are doing yourself a disservice.
