New this year: The Buffalo Niagara Partnership is pleased to introduce you to the finalists for the 2021 ATHENA Organizational Award®, which will recognize two organizations that support, develop, and honor women leaders, inspiring women to achieve their full potential and creating balance in leadership throughout Buffalo Niagara.
The award will be presented to one for-profit organization and one non-profit organization. Nominations were reviewed for the organization’s culture, community engagement, and leadership in supporting women.

Meet This Week’s ATHENA Organizational Award® Finalist
Seneca Gaming Corporation
Seneca Gaming Corporation is a wholly owned, tribally chartered corporation of the Seneca Nation of Indians which operates all of the Nation’s Class III gaming operations in Western New York. These include Seneca Niagara Resort & Casino, Seneca Buffalo Creek Casino, Seneca Allegany Resort & Casino, and Seneca Hickory Stick Golf in Lewiston, NY. The casino properties collectively employ more than 2,700 workers and attract millions of visitors each year.
Seneca Gaming Corporation supports and encourages women to pursue advancement within the company. This is evident by the numbers that Seneca Gaming Corporation boasts with regard to women in leadership roles including:
- The corporation’s executive team is 50% women
- The corporation’s board of directors is 1/3 women, including the Chair
- 81 women hold positions of manager or above
- Manager positions alone consist of 50 women
- 23 women hold director level positions and there are 5 women VPs
- 41.12% of all management positions at Seneca Gaming Corporation are currently held by women.
Seneca Gaming Corporation offers paid training and tuition reimbursement, which further offers women the opportunity to advance.
Seneca Gaming Corporation supports various organizations that benefit women and girls through sponsorships and donations. In 2019, the corporation provided sponsorships and donations to 16 organizations that support women and girls including Global Gaming Women and the Hispanic Women’s League.
The executive team participates as speakers at several conferences mentoring women. For example, representatives have spoken at NYSSCPA (NYS Society of CPAs) Women’s Leadership Forum, International Women’s Day Event, locally sponsored by Ernst & Young both as a moderator and speaker. Leadership has also joined the All IN steering committee through WNY Women’s Foundation to make Western New York a premier place for women to live, work, and lead by engaging our community.
As noted, Seneca Gaming Corporation boasts a 50% female executive team (Sr. VP and above). There are 81 women holding positions of manager or above, manager positions alone consist of 50 women, and 23 women hold director level positions including 5 women VPs. In all, 41.12% of all management positions at Seneca Gaming Corporation are held by women. Also one–third of the corporation’s Board of Directors positions are held by women, including the Chair.
