Introducing Cynthia Vance, finalist for the 2021 ATHENA Leadership Award

Meet This Week’s ATHENA Leadership Award® Finalist

Cynthia Vance is a Managing Partner at Jensen Marks Langer and Vance, an independent wealth management firm, and CEO of Sterling Investment Counsel, a registered investment advisory firm. Cynthia has worked in the financial services industry for more than 35 years and earned her law degree from the University at Buffalo School of Law.  

Cynthia’s long list of volunteer and community activities include serving as President of the Board of Trustees for the Center for Elder Law & Justice; as a member of the Board of Trustees for Canisius College and Chair of the Endowment Committee; as a member of the Board of Trustees for Nichols Schooand Chair of their Endowment Committee; as Vice Chair of the Board of Trustees of Buffalo Toronto Public Media (WNED|WBFOand a board member of The Buffalo Club. 

First Job

Cynthia’s first job was in sales for Brush-Wellman, Inc, the world’s largest beryllium processor.

Cynthia lists the formation of the registered investment advisory firm, Sterling Investment Counsel, LLC, as a significant career highlight. 

Best Piece of Advice Given Regarding Her Career

Volunteering is important.  It enhances one’s life satisfaction, one’s sense of purpose and it positively impacts the community and the lives of others. 

Advice to Give to a Woman Just Starting in the Workplace

Work hard, be confident and don’t be afraid to take risks.
