Meet This Week’s Athena Finalist
New York State
Kathy Hochul has served as Lieutenant Governor of New York State since being elected in 2015 with Governor Andrew Cuomo. Previously she was U.S. Representative for New York’s 26th Congressional District and she served as County Clerk of Erie County before that.
A native of Buffalo, Kathy has long been a voice for women in New York, fighting for equal rights and protections as the only female, statewide elected official. She is co-founder of the Kathleen Mary House, a transitional home for victims of domestic violence, and is actively involved with the YWCA and the League of Women Voters. She currently chairs New York State’s Women’s Suffrage Commission, as well as the State’s Regional Economic Development Council.
First Job Out of School
Kathy’s first job was as a waitress and cook at Skis Pizzeria in Boston, NY.
Kathy has been elected at every level of government, from town board and county clerk, to congress and now lieutenant governor. Her current position makes her the only statewide elected woman in New York State. She recently accepted Governor Cuomo’s call to continue her public service by returning as his choice for lieutenant governor in the upcoming 2018 election.
