The Editorial Board: Donations of money to News Neediest will ease the hardest season in memory

There has not been a harder holiday in recent memory. Under the relentless punishment of the Covid-19 pandemic, need is great. It’s why those who can should give to the News Neediest Fund.

This is 39th year the drive has filled in the gaps for thousands of families and, so far, Western New Yorkers have donated more than $85,000 in money as well as thousands of toys for children 12 and under.

The Fund raised $165,000 in donations last year and provided toys for more than 8,900 children. And more than 17,000 households were helped last year with holiday meals.

The effort has gained force. National Grid is giving $10,000 for toy and gift card purchases. It is part of the Gift to Give social media challenge, in tandem with The Buffalo News and the Buffalo Niagara Partnership. Participants can share how they are supporting local businesses with #ItsOurJobWNY hashtag. For every share, National Grid will donate $50 up to a maximum of $10,000. As an extra giving incentive, $100 will be donated to one participant’s charity of choice. Learn more at
