After months of work, 6,900 applications were brought down to 11 finalists who competed for their portion of 5 million dollars. The best part? All 11 teams will be growing their start-ups in Buffalo.
The culmination of the week of celebration was the Awards Ceremony at Shea’s on Thursday evening, Oct. 30.
While local team ASi, LLC was the million dollar winner, all 11 teams walked away with monetary prizes:
$1 MILLION WINNER:
- ASi, LLC
- Energy Intelligence
- Eulysis UK Limited
- Medical Conservation Devices, LLC
- Raland Therapeutics, Inc.
- Asana Medical, Inc.
- Genetesis, LLC
- HemoGenyx, LLC.
In addition to these cash prizes, 43North finalists will also receive free incubator space in Buffalo for one year, guidance from mentors in related fields, and access to other business incentive programs such as Start-Up NY.
Also helping to drive their commitment to the region is Buffalo’s low-cost environment and “the feeling that they’ll be embraced as an important part of what they see as a regional economic surge,” as stated in this Buffalo Business First article.
Almost 1,000 people watched the finalists pitch on the stage of Shea’s and more than twice that amount joined to watch the awards ceremony later that evening. I was lucky enough to get the unique perspective from backstage, as I spent two days with the teams while they rehearsed and got to know the city.
Randall Lane, 43 North judge and editor of Forbes, put it best: “I’ve never seen such a pure, positive celebration of entrepreneurship. With the Bills on a bye week, the entire city was talking nothing but start-ups: there was nary a cabbie, hotel clerk or bartender who, after asking what brought me to town, couldn’t tick off the contest’s minutia.”
It’s exciting to see an influx of innovative companies headed by a group of wonderful people.
The teams are thrilled about this opportunity – now it’s up to us to show them that Buffalo is a great place to live, work and play.
