Stanford psychology professor Jennifer Eberhardt in her new book, “Biased: Uncovering the Hidden Prejudice That Shapes What We See, Think and Do,” explains how bias shapes our perception, our decisions, and our culture.
Advice for someone starting, or continuing on their D&I journey:
“Don’t let the fear of not getting it right, paralyze you from taking action. Increase your chances for success by unifying everyone in your organization to be part of this work and seek out their diverse set of perspectives in your planning and enlist the help of all to use mistakes as opportunities to learn and grow together.”
Sesha Yalamanchili is a master facilitator, certified professional coach–trained in positive psychology approaches–and founder of On the Mark Consulting. Sesha has deep curiosity about how groups of people come together in an organization, develop hierarchal structures and create cultural norms and habits for getting work done. She describes herself as being on a learning mission to better understand the conditions needed for each of us to: be able to bring our full and authentic selves to work, have equal opportunity to flourish and grow when we are there, and experience more joy together while being better at delivering results. Her consultancy aims to bring this knowledge to organizations, and over the last year alone On the Mark has delivered training and workshops to help over 150 leaders from Western New York and beyond, to advance their DE&I efforts.
At the D&I Symposium, Sesha will be helping us understand what it means to be a growth minded organization and why creating a mindset for “getting better together”, can be one of the most impactful ways to fuel the success of your DE&I efforts. She will discuss the invisible barrier that so often stands in the way: our fear of trying and not getting it perfectly right. How well we manage this barrier can determine our success or failure – join Sesha for ideas and approaches for success.
