Ashley Rae Lowry
Assistant District Attorney
Erie County District Attorney’s Office
Ashley has been an Assistant District Attorney for almost eight years, predominantly in the Appeals Bureau, where she handles direct appeals, post-conviction motions, and federal habeas corpus petitions. Ashley interned for the District Attorney’s Office during her first and second law school summers, and completed an externship with the U.S. Attorney’s Office during her third year.
First Job Out of School
Prosecutor at Erie County District Attorney’s Office, hired right after passing the bar exam
Ashley notes that for appellate attorneys, the ultimate ‘feat of strength’ is winning a case at the NYS Court of Appeals in Albany, the state’s equivalent to the U.S. Supreme Court. Ashley has argued there four times, and she remains undefeated. This past year, one of her cases received statewide attention and NYU School of Law asked her to guest lecture a class regarding its significance.
Best Piece of Advice Given Regarding Career
Don’t re-create the wheel. This is not permission to plagiarize others’ work, but take it as an opportunity to cultivate relationships with mentors, collaborate with colleagues, and to create templates for use and to provide to others. By working smarter, not harder, it encourages more creativity in the argument.

On Buffalo Niagara
“Buffalo has long been called the City of Good Neighbors, and the region as a whole lives up to that reputation, particularly in its diversity and acceptance of other cultures, immigrants, and refugees. The people and businesses of WNY, time and again, respect and encourage each other to make the area a great place to live and work. And it’s affordable, too!
Greatest Benefit of Working in Buffalo Niagara
“Former Buffalo Bills coach Marv Levy said it best: ‘Where else would you rather be than right here, right now?’ The Buffalo Niagara region has it all – a diverse food and beverage scene, a variety of music venues, accessible parks, all four seasons, professional sports teams, and tourist destinations all within a day’s drive. And right now, we are in a renaissance unlike anything we have seen in generations. I am proud to be a part of it.”
Greatest hope for the future of the Buffalo Niagara business community
“My hope for our community is to ‘keep on keeping on.’ We have made so much progress, and others are already taking notice – the best is yet to come.”
