Congress came together in a bipartisan way this week to fully fund the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative (GLRI) through the end of the fiscal year. The $300 million in funding was part of the FY 2017 Omnibus Appropriations bill passed by Congress.
The Buffalo Niagara Partnership, in collaboration with the Great Lakes Metro Chambers Coalition continually advocated for the sustained funding of this program during a recent visit to Washington, DC and letters to our local federal delegation. The threat to the GLRI, however, remains very real. In his budget blueprint, President Trump proposed a 97 percent cut to the GLRI for FY 2018. Nearly zeroing out funding for this program will jeopardize the restoration of New York’s largest natural resources.
The Great Lakes are a vital economic asset for our region, providing drinking water, recreation, power generation, agriculture support, and transportation to its citizens. Click here to read more on the impact the GLRI is making on our economy.
