Savarino works with the Partnership to build case for Brownfield Cleanup Program in New York State.
Sam Savarino knows firsthand how important New York State’s Brownfield Cleanup Program (BCP) is to continued redevelopment and construction in the Buffalo Niagara region. Chief Executive Officer of Savarino Companies, his projects are among the region’s best examples of the benefits of the BCP, which provides incentives for private companies to remediate and redevelop urban brownfield sites.
Savarino utilized the BCP to redevelop the recently completed 500 Seneca, a mixed-use project in the City of Buffalo, as well as Buffalo River Landing, a luxury apartment project underway on the Buffalo River. “These projects simply would not have been initiated without the BCP,” Savarino explains.
With the current BCP set to expire at the end of 2015, the Buffalo Niagara Partnership made the extension of the program a top legislative priority within its advocacy efforts.
The group hammers it home.
Savarino – a Partnership member for more than 15 years – joined other members in investing their time and expertise to help the Partnership take its BCP message to Albany.
The group met with the Western New York Legislature Delegation and advocated for making the extension a part the State Budget agreement being developed by the Governor and legislative leaders. In the end, a 10-year extension was passed.
“I was very impressed with the resources the Partnership employed to help influence this important legislation,” says Savarino. “Not only their advocacy expertise, but also their willingness to roll up their sleeves and get to work.”
