It is an issue that is fast becoming a priority for businesses today. Creating and fostering diversity and inclusion in the workplace is not only the right thing to do, it is the smart thing to do for every type of company.
Buffalo Niagara Partnership members have made it very clear – diversity and inclusion are issues we must address to help sustain economic growth in the Buffalo Niagara region.
In fact, as part of our advocacy survey, 44% of respondents said they struggle to achieve a diverse workforce – which is nearly double from last year.
That is why the Partnership created our new Diversity & Inclusion Council, launched in late September. This new Council is focused on creating awareness about the competitive advantages of having a diverse and inclusive workforce and the benefits that will bring to the regional business climate.
A Diverse Start.
Response to the Partnership’s Diversity & Inclusion Council has been incredibly strong with initial commitments from a wide range of member companies. We had strong attendance at our launch event, with more than 40 companies representing a broad mix of industries and employer size.
Council members discussed a work plan to accomplish the following objectives:
- Raising awareness of the competitive advantages of diversity
- Developing best practice sessions to help employers identify and overcome diversity and inclusion challenges in the workplace
- Identifying resources to provide data, sample programs/policies, tools, etc.
