Partnership Advocacy Progress Report

Strengthening the Buffalo Niagara Business Climate
New York State’s business climate bears (and deserves) the brunt of the blame for Upstate’s abysmal job growth, downright depressing population losses (especially of 24- to-35-year-olds) and public finance turmoil.  Upstate must be “unshackled” from anti-competitive laws and regulations if we are to survive, let alone thrive.
Strengthening Buffalo Niagara's Economy - UB 2020
UB 2020 is the University at Buffalo’s plan for achieving enduring academic excellence. Among the many outcomes of this plan will be a university that is “bigger in size, sharper in both focus and physical appearance, and stronger academically than ever before.” The Partnership board endorsed UB2020 because it believes achieving the plan’s outcome will be – without question – one of the most significant economic development initiatives in our region in a long time.
Enhancing Economic Development Tools
Summary: Economic development incentives exist to somewhat offset the sting of laws, fees, taxes, mandates and regulations that make New York the second-highest cost-of-doing-business state in the nation. However, incentives will encourage real private-sector investment only if they are highly-coordinated, customer-friendly and development-savvy. The desired outcome: more private sector investment and jobs.
Ensuring the Free Flow of Goods and People Across the CanAm Border
An expedited, safe and uncomplicated flow of goods and people across the Canadian/US border at Buffalo Niagara is vital to the growth of the region’s economy.
"Playing Defense"
In addition to our proactive advocacy agenda, more often than not we find ourselves taking a defensive posture against new taxes, regulations and anti-business legislation at all levels of government. The Partnership is the only business advocacy organization in the Buffalo Niagara region reacting to these issues, and educating our elected representatives on their impact on jobs and investment.
